Management in Long-Term Care Facilities
This past Monday in class Professor
Bonica had a guest speaker come in and talk about long term care management.
Prior to this class, my thoughts on long-term care was that it was boring and
below working in a Hospital. My view was very wrong. I listened to this speaker
with great focus and learned that long term care facilities have changed
tremendously. In fact, I can see myself fitting in to this organization very
well. In this field, management roles are more personal. They have less
patients who stay longer which allows a personal relationship to build. I will
be happier going to work each day greeting patients that I know all about. It
will feel rewarding to know exactly who I am affecting and in what way.
I also
learned that in long term care I will have the opportunity to move up the
ladder and potentially reach a very high professional standing. This speaker
said he started off as a social worker and is now running seven different
facilities in Massachusetts. I want a career that I can build on and grow with each
year that passes by; long-term care will give me the room to do so. There is a
great deal of amount of responsibility that comes with this opportunity. Specifically,
with elderly, there are a lot of things that can go wrong, and so there are
specific protocols that keep things in line. I learned that one day it could be
my role to hire people trustworthy enough to never skip a step, or to fire
people that do. The elderly is a group of fragile human beings. There are so
many crucial roles that must be played to run a successful facility.
After this guest speaker, my eyes
and ears are wide open to learn more about what it takes to manage a long-term
care facility. I am so thankful to have learned from this speaker because now I
have opened my mindset about where I want to work in the future.
LTC is a big part of healthcare. These institutions are taking care of some of the sickest patients in the system and provides for continuity of care and ongoing monitoring. If this is something you're interested in I would suggest reach out to your local facilities if they have volunteer opportunities. Not only is this a great resume builder but it is something that allows you to give back to your community and experience the culture of a LTC institution.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice, I checked out the Edgewood Facility and it seems like they love to have volunteers.
DeleteI agree with Meghan - there are a number of LTC facilities around Durham - they would be happy to have you spend some time with them - especially as a volunteer.
