Management in Long-Term Care Facilities

This past Monday in class Professor Bonica had a guest speaker come in and talk about long term care management. Prior to this class, my thoughts on long-term care was that it was boring and below working in a Hospital. My view was very wrong. I listened to this speaker with great focus and learned that long term care facilities have changed tremendously. In fact, I can see myself fitting in to this organization very well. In this field, management roles are more personal. They have less patients who stay longer which allows a personal relationship to build. I will be happier going to work each day greeting patients that I know all about. It will feel rewarding to know exactly who I am affecting and in what way.             I also learned that in long term care I will have the opportunity to move up the ladder and potentially reach a very high professional standing. This speaker said he started off as a social worker and is now r...

Leprosy in Hawaii

In class this past Friday, Professor Bonica shared several stories with us about different communities and how they dealt with health issues. One particular story that stuck with me was one about Leprosy in Hawaii. In the 1800s, Hawaii was being attacked with major diseases, that were spreading very fast, damaging their whole population. One of these diseases was leprosy. So Hawaii’s strategy was to send all of the diseased individuals to Kalaupapa, on the island of Molokai. They chose to quarantine all of the ill to try and stop this highly infectious disease. I thought this was so interesting because back then there was no treatment for this terrible disease so the people of Hawaii had to make a tough call. They chose to forcefully remove infected people from their lives regardless of if they had children or a wife, no matter what, and force them to stay on an island full of other diseased people. This is what health care management was in the 1800s. It really makes...

Health and Human Services Within the White House

This week I found an article titled, President Trump names Eric Hargan acting HHS secretary, from Fierce Healthcare. I found it an interesting subject to look at health management within the White House. It is crucial to make sure there is a strong, highly educated, person running such an important department. This was a very recent event from last week, so this is the first time I have learned anything about it.             Mr.  Hargans previous experience consumed of his service in the Bush administration and serving on President Trumps HHS transition team. He was supported with seven democrats, one independent and all Republicans. I thought this was interesting because democrats and republicans have different views regarding many health topics such as the ACA. I believe this is a good thing because people of all political parties must believe Mr. Hargan has the peoples best interest in mind. Mr. Hargan will hopefully create new positive energy in...
